Where to adopt a pet in Washington County

Our staff works hard to reunite lost pets with their families. If no owner comes forward, adoptable animals are moved to partner organizations to find new homes.

We are grateful to work with local foster home-based rescues in addition to our partners within the Animal Shelter Alliance of Portland (ASAP) Coalition. Because of these awesome partnerships, adoptions at the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter don’t happen in the same way they used to.

There are times when we make animals available for adoption in special circumstances, but for the most part they are returned to their owners or, after their stray hold, we find fast and wonderful outcomes for them through our shelter partner transfer program. This allows us to focus on what we are really good at, providing stray animal care and great community response services including public safety field enforcement. This also allows us to support our animal shelter partners who have very robust adoption programs with animals to adopt!

If you are looking to adopt a pet, we recommend checking with other area shelters to see if they have animals available for adoption.  You can also check out Petfinder or chat with friends or family who might know of an animal looking for a home.

Adding a new dog to your family? Be sure to license them!
