Deputies Arrest Shoplifter Found in Possession of Stolen Gun

On Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at approximately 11:34 a.m., Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a theft occurring at the Target located at 12675 NW Cornell Road.

On Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at approximately 11:34 a.m., Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a theft occurring at the Target located at 12675 NW Cornell Road.

The caller with loss prevention reported a man was concealing items not paid for in a bag at the self-checkout.

Deputies arrived and took the man into custody as he exited the store without paying for the merchandise. The man was identified as 36-year-old Rhyan Baney of Portland.

Baney was arrested for the theft from Target, and deputies found a loaded handgun in his property. The gun was discovered to have been stolen out of Portland. The stolen items from Target were returned to loss prevention. The owner of the handgun was located, and the firearm was returned.

Baney was lodged in the Washington County Jail on charges including:

  • Theft in the first degree 
  • Felon in possession of a weapon
  • Theft in third degree
  • Parole violation (Multnomah County Parole and Probation)
  • Resisting arrest
