Media release

July 2023 has been a particularly dangerous month for drivers in Washington County. Since the beginning of the month, deputies have responded to three fatal crashes.

The latest incident happened this morning around 5:30 a.m., on NW Susbauer Road and NW Hornecker Road. The driver, a 29-year-old man, hit the victim, who was riding his bicycle to work and was only 30 feet from the driveway of his place of employment.

The victim, 76-year-old Constantino Guzman-Rojas, died at the scene from his injuries. Guzman-Rojas's family was notified of his death.

The driver operating a semi-truck stayed on the scene and cooperated with investigators. He was cited for careless driving with a vulnerable roadway user enhancement.

The Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART) responded to lead the investigation. To date, CART has investigated 15 fatal crashes in 2023, and in 2022, CART investigated 22 fatal crashes. Washington County is on pace to have more fatal crashes this year than we have had in over a decade.

The Sheriff’s Office asks everyone to take it slow on the roads. Drive sober, wear your seatbelt, put down your phone, and watch for pedestrians and bikers.
