The Great Oregon ShakeOut - October 18, 2012

The Oregon Office of Emergency Management is leading an annual earthquake drill, called the Great Oregon ShakeOut, using a promotional model that began in southern California in 2008. Participants in the drill plan to practice taking protective action in response to an hypothetical earthquake at 10:18 a.m. on October 18 by dropping to the ground, seeking cover under a sturdy desk or table and holding on to a table leg or similar anchor point. This year, the ShakeOut will involve tens of thousands of people conducting similar drills in over a dozen U.S. states and territories, the Canadian province of British Columbia, and the nations of Japan and New Zealand.  

Because employees took part in a mandatory earthquake drill in their workplaces earlier this year, Washington County has chosen to participate in the ShakeOut by encouraging employees to conduct a "Drop, Cover and Hold on" drill at an appropriate time at home with their families. Washington County is also encouraging employees to participate in an Energy and Preparedness Fair on October 25 to learn more about earthquakes and other aspects of disaster preparedness.
