In celebration of our community planners, the Washington County Board of Commissioners approved a proclamation making October National Community Planning Month during its regular meeting on Tuesday, October 7.

“We truly appreciate and respect the dedication and expertise of our staff, our Planning Commissioners and so many community members who provide input informing and shaping our plans,” said Carol Johnson, Planning and Development Services Manager. “Planners consider how their recommendations will affect individuals and communities today and far into the future.”

Community Planning Month is nationally recognized and calls attention to the value of planners in our community. Here in Washington County their work includes creating space for public input, guiding efforts towards increased quality-of-life and helping communities create a shared vision for the future.

“As we update our Transportation System Plan we have the opportunity to align local priorities with Oregon’s climate goals,” said Steve Kelley, Senior Transportation Planner. “We plan to meet state requirements while also building a transportation network that better serves our community.”

Our Development Review/Current Planning team works with developers, consultants and others to make sure development in the unincorporated area meets County, state and Metro codes.

“On a daily basis, we help guide and inform landowners and applicants about development options within the context of the Community Development Code and the Community Plans,” said Paul Schaefer, Senior Planner in Planning and Development Services. “The review process helps applicants obtain land use approval for their projects that staff anticipate will also promote community safety and neighborhood livability.”
