$95K grant awarded to Washington County for transportation safety plan

A $95,000 grant to help reduce transportation-related injuries and fatalities has been awarded to Washington County's Department of Land Use & Transportation (LUT) by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT).

LUT will use the grant to create a Transportation Safety Action Plan (TSAP) that addresses safety for all motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists. The plan will use County road crash data to help the project team focus on goals, objectives and tactics to make County roads safer.

"Development of this plan will involve collaboration with neighboring jurisdictions, agencies, organizations and other County departments," said Andrew Singelakis, LUT director. "This also requires involvement and commitment from the public."

Work on the TSAP started this month with the selection of HDR, Inc. as the project consultant. The plan will use the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) "5 E" approach – Engineering, Education, Enforcement, Encouragement, and Evaluation – aimed at making roadways safer for all users, particularly those traveling by bicycle or on foot. Plan development will also include facilitation of an advisory committee and public involvement events.

The Board of County Commissioners will be asked to consider adoption of the plan sometime next fall. Implementation is expected to begin in early 2017.
