Cultural Celebrations and Days of Recognition​

Washington County cultural celebrations and resource pages are a starting point for our collective organizational learning.

These events are planned and organized by passionate staff who volunteer on event committees in addition to performing their official work. If you're curious about the presentations you see here or would like to be involved in the planning of these special events, please email [email protected]​.

Black History Month (February)​

Black History Month pays "tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society." Black History Month celebrations at the County are coordinated by Marcus Ford.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Month (May)​

Asian American and Pacific Islander Month pays "tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America's history and are instrumental in its future success." AAPI Month celebrations at the County are coordinated by Marcus Ford.​

Pride Month (June)​

Pride Month is a "month-long celebration demonstrating how LGBTQ Americans have strengthened our country by using their talent and creativity to help create awareness and goodwill." Pride Month celebrations at the County are coordinated by Amanda Garcia-Snell.​

Juneteenth (June 19)​

Juneteenth is the "oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States." It is also the most recent day to be designated as a federal holiday (designated as a holiday by Congress on June 16, 2021). Juneteenth at the County is coordinated by Marcus Ford.

Latino/a/x/ Hispanic Heritage Month  (September 15 – October 15)​

Latino/a/x Hispanic Heritage Month "traditionally honors the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans as we celebrate heritage rooted in all Latin American countries." Latino/a/x Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations at the County are coordinated by Christina Barboza.​

Native American Heritage Month (November)​

Native American Heritage Month celebrates the "rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people." Native American Heritage Month celebrations at the County are coordinated by Christina Barboza.​

Transgender Awareness Week (November 13 – 20)​

The week before Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20, people and organizations around the country participate in Transgender Awareness Week to "help raise the visibility of transgender people and address issues that members of the community face." Transgender Awareness Week at the County is coordinated by Amanda Garcia-Snell.
