On Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at approximately 4:30 PM, an adult in custody (AIC) notified a deputy working in one of the housing units that two AICs were unresponsive and not breathing in the recreation area. The deputy immediately went to the two AICs and began CPR on one of the unconscious AICs. A third AIC assisted the deputy by starting CPR on the second unresponsive AIC.

Additional deputies and jail medical personnel arrived in the housing unit to assist with life-saving measures. While performing CPR, deputies also administered Naloxone, commonly known as Narcan. During the life-saving efforts, deputies administered approximately four doses of Naloxone to each of the unconscious AICs. All Washington County Sheriff’s Office Deputies carry Naloxone or have it readily available.

Hillsboro Fire Department and American Medical Response were also called to assist. Both AICs regained consciousness while at Washington County Jail before being transferred to a local hospital for further medical care.

One of the AICs who was initially found unresponsive had pills that deputies suspect contained fentanyl. The Washington County Sheriff's Office Jail Investigator is currently looking into how the drugs got into the jail. The Jail Investigator’s preliminary investigation leads them to believe that a different AIC may have brought the pills into the jail. The investigation is ongoing.
