Elections Office Moves to New Location

The Washington County Elections Office is relocating from Beaverton to Hillsboro this week. The new office will be in the SunTech Corporate Park at 2925 NE Aloclek Drive, Suite 170, Hillsboro. 

Aloclek Drive is a quarter of a mile east of NE Cornelius Pass Road and is accessible from NW Evergreen Parkway to the north and NE Cornell Road to the south. TriMet bus lines 47 and 48 provide service to this part of Hillsboro.

The Elections Office will be closed October 9 for the move and will reopen at the new location on October 10. Voters participating in the November 5 election this year and future elections will be able to access the full complement of elections services from the new location, including: 
•  registering to vote, 
•  changing voter registration information, 
•  seeking assistance or requesting information about voting, 
•  dropping off completed ballots before election deadlines, 
•  filing as a candidate for local elected offices.

The increased volume of work associated with supporting Oregon’s vote-by-mail process in Washington County is the primary reason for the move. Voter registrations in Washington County amounted to 228,500 in 2002 when the Elections Office relocated to its current address on SW Murray Boulevard in Beaverton. Voter registrations have since climbed to 365,000 in 2019, nearly a 60 percent increase. 

“Voters will be better supported by this move to Aloclek,” said County Clerk Rich Hobernicht. “Our vote-by-mail system works best when we can process completed ballots quickly and accurately using the most cost-effective equipment available. Our new location will allow us to do just that while also providing room for expansions of our office as the community we serve grows.”

An example of the space requirements needed for the Elections Office can be found in the technology used to process tens of thousands of return envelops each election cycle. An automated mail sorter –the size and weight of a midsized car – has helped process these envelops in recent years. To allow for the added weight of the sorter, steel floor plates needed to be installed on the second-story office building on Murray Boulevard. A second mail sorter, purchased earlier this year to keep pace with increase voter participation, would simply not have fit within that 9,800-square-foot office space in Beaverton. 

The new location on NE Aloclek Drive, which is zoned for industrial and commercial facilities, will better accommodate the unique operational needs for the Elections Office. In addition to offering better structural support for equipment like the two high-speed mail sorters, the Aloclek location provides roughly twice the square footage as the prior location, enough to accommodate the roughly 200 temporary employees hired to support each major election.
