Ballots Remaining to Be Processed

As of 12:15 p.m. November 6, Washington County elections officials have received 190,652 ballots representing 71.05 percent of the county's 268,337 registered voters. A total of 186,834 ballots have been tallied so far.   

Of the approximately 4,000 ballots received but not tallied:

• About 1,000 ballots have been challenged because elections officials question whether a voter's eligibility has changed since last registering to vote, or because a voter has challenged another voter's eligibility to vote, or because the signature on the return envelope does not match the voter registration card. Elections officials have sent letters to the voters who have cast these challenged ballots requesting information needed in order to determine eligibility by Friday, November 12.
• Roughly 1,000 ballots have been determined ineligible for tallying because these ballots were returned in envelopes without signatures, because a spouse signed the return envelope on behalf of the voter, or for other issues that render these ballots ineligible under Oregon's vote-by-mail procedure.
• Just under 2,000 ballots require additional processing to determine voter intent in accord with state election requirements. These ballots may have been damaged, may include write-in candidates or have other characteristics that make them difficult to process using ballot scanning machines.

The Elections Office has until November 22 to complete the ballot counting process and certify the election with the Oregon Secretary of State's Office. At that time, the official results and a precinct-by-precinct abstract will also be available on the Washington County website.
