Alan Rappleyea has announced he will step down in January 2021 as the lead attorney with the Office of County Counsel

Rappleyea, who has served as the county government’s lead attorney since 2011, was also city attorney for Beaverton from 2003 to 2011 and was a senior assistant county counsel with Washington County from 1996 to 2003. Before coming to Washington County, Rappleyea was both county counsel and planning director with Crook County, Oregon.

Rappleyea has been a member of the Oregon State Bar since 1989. He was former chair of the Oregon State Bar Government Law Section and former president of the County Counsel Association. He is licensed in Oregon and Washington State (inactive), the Oregon and Washington Federal District Courts, the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court. He was also certified member of the American Institute for Planners.

“Alan has been an excellent attorney for our county government organization and has served our community with distinction throughout his 31-year career,” said Kathryn Harrington, chair of the board of county commissioners. “Nearly every major decision the county has faced during Alan’s tenure has benefited from his sound legal advice. On behalf of the entire Board of Commissioners, I want to express how grateful we are for his service and leadership. We wish him a fun- and adventure-filled retirement!”

“I greatly respect the good work that the Washington County Board and county staff have done for the residents of the county and fully expect that good work to continue,” said Rappleyea. “The programs and projects that the county is working on are exciting, but I am looking forward to a new chapter in my life.”

Recruitment efforts are being planned with guidance from the Novak Consulting Group. More information about the recruitment will be announced in January 2021.

The Office of County Counsel provides legal advice to the Washington County government and affiliated agencies.
