Washington County Schedules Public Services Building Time Capsule Ceremony

In May of 1990, when the Washington County Public Services Building was brand new, community members contributed artifacts and memorabilia to a time capsule which was buried near the main entrance. Having passed the original target date to unearth the capsule in 2010, and prompted by a comprehensive seismic retrofit project for the building scheduled to begin in the next few months, Washington County is making plans to rediscover the time capsule.

On Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at 12 o'clock noon, the County will host a brief ceremony for the community to witness the opening of the capsule and examine its contents together. Along with a pair of hermetically sealed Nike Air Jordan shoes, the capsule also reportedly contains the winning essays written by local school children who answered the question, "What three things would you like to see changed by the year 2010?" According to Washington County Board Chair Andy Duyck, "Time capsules are a bit unique these days so we're really looking forward to this opportunity. We would love to locate the now-grown-up students who wrote those essays and recognize them at the ceremony. If any of them are still in the community and would like to participate, I encourage them to contact Julie McCloud at 503-846-8685 or by email at [email protected]."

The Public Services Building is located at 155 North First Avenue in Hillsboro. The ceremony will take place just outside the main entrance on First Avenue. Plans have been underway for several months to retrofit the building's structural frame and internal systems to withstand a Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. Construction on the project is expected to begin in early winter and continue for approximately two years.
