Bonnie Hays Shelter Receives $120,000 Donation from Bequest
Media release

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Sponsored by: Health and Human Services Department, Animal Services Division

The Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter received a donation of over $120,000 from the estate of Nancy Parr of Beaverton on December 11.

"Nancy was a long-time supporter of many animal causes, including the Bonnie Hays shelter," says Deborah Wood, manager of Animal Services for Washington County. "She gave generously during her lifetime. We will all miss Nancy, who was a wonderful person, but her kindness and compassion will live on with this extremely generous bequest."

The donation will be applied toward the shelter's veterinary care of stray and abandoned animals.

"Our shelter receives County funds for the basic services we provide – but all the extra care comes from the generosity of people like Nancy in our community," says Wood. This year, the shelter hired its first full-time veterinarian, and is earmarking donations for the medical treatment of animals. "When animals need surgery or other medical treatment to become adoptable, we can do that now. It is transforming what we can do for the animals – and that transforms a community."

Parr died in August, and funds were recently made available for distribution. This is one of the largest donations in the shelter's history, and is the largest donation in more than four years.
