Washington County Disability, Aging and Veteran Services Family Caregiver Support Program is teaming up with Beaverton City Library to offer a four-part series for caregivers this spring.

Titled “Practical Skills for Family and Friend Caregivers,” the workshops are free and open to anyone caring for a loved one. Participants may attend one, some or all sessions. All classes take place at the Beaverton City Library, 12375 SW Fifth St.

The first workshop is called “Bathing Without a Battle” and will take place on Saturday, March 7, from 10-11:30 a.m.

“When someone is living with dementia, bathing can be one of the most difficult parts of their day,” said class facilitator and Older Adult Behavioral Health Specialist Kera Magarill. “What was once a mundane or even relaxing activity often becomes a tense, scary or intrusive struggle.”

In a study conducted by the Center for Advanced Palliative Care and the Gary and Mary West Health Institute, family caretakers identified refusal to bathe as one of the most challenging behaviors of their loved ones living with dementia.

Attendees will learn about special techniques, proper preparation, and helpful products and supplies to help those with dementia bathe without the fear and fighting.

Future workshops focus on caregiving safely on April 6 from 10-11:30 a.m.; legal keys to health care on April 26 from 4:30-6 p.m.; and occupational therapy approaches to caregiving on May 4 from 6-7:30 p.m.
