Free Workshop Helps Residents Prepare for a Safe July 4th Cookout

Washington County Environmental Health, Solid Waste & Recycling and OSU Extension Service are hosting a free workshop on Saturday, June 17, 2017 to address two hot topics: food safety and food waste prevention.

Washington County Environmental Health, Solid Waste & Recycling, OSU Extension Service and City of Beaverton Solid Waste & Recycling are hosting a free workshop on Saturday, June 17, to address two hot topics: food safety and food waste prevention. There will be two sessions, one geared toward food service facility operators, the other for community members. The workshop takes place at Beaverton City Hall, 12725 SW Millikan Way.

Participants in the general session will learn how to incorporate food safety practices in their home, from understanding expiration dates, to proper canning techniques, to safe cooking both indoors and out.

“One out of every six people gets sick each year from a foodborne illness,” says Environmental Health Program Educator Ximena Fonseca-Morales. “This workshop will provide practical, easy-to-understand tips on keeping food safe, which is especially important with summer barbeque season kicking into high gear.”

Participants will also learn how reducing food waste can save money and help them eat more healthfully.

Session one for operators takes place from 10 a.m.– 12:30 p.m. Session two for community members takes place from noon – 2:30 p.m.
