Hillsboro Resident Named Outstanding Oregon Woman Veteran of the Year

Hillsboro resident Mae 'Betty' Pomeroy, who served in the US Army for 30 years and retired as a Colonel in 1988, was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Oregon Woman Veteran of the Year Award on March 30th at the Women's Veteran Conference in Salem.

Through her service, Pomeroy received many honors including two Legion of Merit Awards, five Meritorious Service Medals, two National Defense Awards, two Army Commendation Awards and an Army Service Ribbon.

"Betty Pomeroy is a selfless advocate for the veterans of Washington County," says Veteran Services Supervisor Eric Belt. "I can think of no one more deserving to receive the Outstanding Oregon Woman Veteran of the Year award for 2012."

Since her retirement, Betty has worked tirelessly to make a difference for seniors, people with disabilities and veterans in Washington County. She has procured donations of blankets, food, hygiene kits and clothing for homeless veterans and gathered medical supplies and equipment for seniors who cannot afford to buy these items themselves.

Pomeroy was the first woman to serve on the Governor's Advisory Committee for the Oregon Department of Veteran Affairs. She is dedicated to the completion of a Veterans Memorial at the Fairgrounds; serves as the chairperson of Washington County Disability Aging & Veterans Service Advisory Council; supports Lacey's House homeless shelter for veterans; and is active with the Elks and American Legion.

Betty's 30 years of military service in the military prepared her for a second career of service in Washington County. "Her time and efforts in our community make her an outstanding advocate for citizens in our county who are unable to advocate for themselves." says Jeff Hill, Area Agency on Aging Director for Washington County.
