Washington County Offering Free Memory Screenings on November 30

As part of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s (AFA) National Memory Screening Program, Washington County Disability, Aging and Veteran Services (DAVS) will offer free, confidential memory screenings on Thursday, November 30, 2017. The screenings will take place from 1-4 p.m. at 5240 NE Elam Young Parkway, Suite 300, in Hillsboro. The location is just steps away from the Hawthorn Farm MAX station.

Trained staff will administer the memory screenings and provide educational materials about memory concerns, brain health and caregiving. The face-to-face screenings consist of a series of questions and tasks, and last approximately 10 minutes.

“We hope people will take advantage of these free screenings,” says Mjere Simantel, program supervisor for DAVS. “While the result of the screening isn’t a diagnosis, it can help individuals decide if they should see a physician for a full evaluation.”

AFA suggests memory screenings for anyone who is concerned about memory loss or experiencing warning signs of dementia; whose family and friends have noticed changes in them; who believe they are at risk due to a family history of dementia; or who want to see how their memory is now and for future comparisons.

Warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease include forgetting people’s names and events, asking repetitive questions, loss of verbal or written skills, confusion and personality changes.
