Media release

The leading international professional association of local government managers announced today that Washington County Administrator Tanya Ange will serve as the organization’s president-elect beginning this fall while continuing her duties as Washington County’s top appointed executive.

The Executive Board of the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) selected Ange after extensive interviews of multiple candidates earlier this month. Ange, who will become the sixth woman to serve as president of the 109-year-old organization, will transition to this top role in the fall of 2024.

ICMA has a mission of advancing professional local government through leadership, management, innovation and ethics. The role of president involves providing policy guidance to the association in its mission and guiding ICMA’s efforts in strengthening the effectiveness of local government globally.

“With a proven track record of exceptional leadership and an unwavering commitment to advancing local governance at both the municipal and county level in communities in ICMA’s Midwest, Mountain Plains and West Coast regions, Tanya Ange brings unparalleled experience and expertise to lead ICMA and the Executive Board going forward,” said Jeff Towery, ICMA President (City Manager, McMinnville, Oregon).

Ange served on the ICMA Executive Board as Midwest regional vice president from 2013-2016, where she was a member of the Audit, Finance and Business Operations Committee. She furthered her commitment to ICMA by serving as a member of the 2013-2014 Task Force on Leadership, the 2022 Conference Planning Committee and as a long-term member and chair of the Performance Management Committee.

The cost of Ange’s travel and lodging through her presidential term will be paid for by ICMA, not from the Washington County budget.

"It is an honor and privilege to be selected as president-elect of ICMA," said Ange. “ICMA is more than just a professional organization to me. I am deeply connected to its values of leadership, management, ethics, equity and inclusion and the pursuit of excellence in local government. I’m beyond excited to give back to this important institution, just as ICMA has supported me and thousands of my local government colleagues in delivering vital services to the communities we serve worldwide.”

“Tanya Ange’s values-centered and professional approach to leadership here in Washington County, including her grasp of best practices and leading-edge systems, is a shining example of what ICMA stands for,” said Washington County Board of Commissioners Chair Kathryn Harrington. “Her approach and hard work as our top appointed executive is demonstrating how a local government can effectively serve its community during these trying, post-pandemic times. Speaking for our board of county commissioners, we give our full support and wish her every success in her upcoming term as ICMA president.”

Prior to her appointment as Washington County administrator, Ange served for four years as deputy city manager for the City of Boulder, Colorado. In that role, Ange oversaw management of the City Manager's Office, including its equity-focused initiatives, as well as departments such as Communications and Engagement, Community Vitality, Finance/Budget, Human Resources, Innovation and Technology, Library and Arts and Transportation and Mobility.

Prior to her service with the City of Boulder, Ange was an assistant to the city manager (2006-2009) and then a deputy city manager/chief of staff (2009-2016) for Mankato, Minnesota, a 44,700-person community in southern Minnesota. Before that, she was a recreation supervisor with the Parks and Recreation Department in New Brighton, Minnesota, a community of 23,500 just northeast of Minneapolis.

Ange is a credentialed manager through ICMA and has earned a master’s degree in Urban Studies Management in 2006 and a bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services in 2000, both at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Washington County, Oregon, has a mission to provide excellent and cost-effective services that support healthy, peaceful, safe and sustainable communities and encourage meaningful participation in community activities and county governance.
