Washington County’s Department of Land Use and Transportation announces it has lifted a long-standing freight truck restriction on Brookwood Avenue between Main Street/Baseline Road and Tualatin Valley Highway (OR 8).

While this section of Brookwood Avenue has been designated as a “Through-Truck Route” in the county’s long-range Transportation System Plan for more than a decade, it was previously posted “No Through Trucks.” Prior to the completion of recent roadway improvements, the road was weight limited due to a pavement structure that was insufficient to support loaded freight trucks. The road also had narrow travel lanes with no center turn lanes or shoulders, as well as substandard curves that created a risk for freight trucks to cross over the centerline into the oncoming travel lane.

Recently completed improvements to this section of Brookwood Avenue include reconstruction of the pavement structure to current freight standards, the widening of the roadway to one lane in each direction with a center turn lane, improvements to the “S” curves, and the addition of bicycle lanes, sidewalks, street lighting and landscaping. With completion of these improvements, the road is now open to freight.

Washington County and its partnering agencies are committed to planning, building and maintaining the best transportation system, ensuring the safety of all roadway users, and operating the county roadway system in a cost-effective and environmentally responsible manner.
