Eclipse could cause cosmic traffic jam

An estimated 1 million people are expected to hit Oregon roads to view the Aug. 21 eclipse. 

ODOT and other transportation-related agencies are making preparations to handle the traffic volume. All motorists should anticipate significantly increased traffic on Monday, Aug. 21, once the eclipse is over and travelers are heading home. 

ODOT does not plan to close any state highways. But as traffic volumes increase, ODOT may restrict some left turns to and from highways in order to keep traffic moving. Cities and counties may choose to do the same.

Motorists are being asked to:

• Help keep roads clear. Stay off the roads help make sure emergency service vehicles can get through. Take transit, ride bicycles or walk. Work from home, if possible.
• Travel with friends. Join friends and family for the trip to reduce the number of cars on the road. Carpool information
• Arrive early, stay put during the eclipse and leave late afterwards. This will reduce the number of vehicles on the road at the same time.
• Be prepared. Plan ahead for basic needs - food, water, gas for the car and bathroom breaks - in the event of prolonged traffic jams.
