Former County Engineer Honored

Following a distinguished military career, Greg began his 18-year career with the Department of Land Use and Transportation (DLUT) in 1993. He retired March 1, 2011 after most recently serving as County Engineer since 2003. He previously served as the Operations and Maintenance Division Manager from 1998 to 2003 and as a Capital Project Management Engineer from 1993 to 1998.

Greg inspired cooperative efforts with our cities, ODOT, developers, and major employers to design and build many transportation projects we rely on every day. His legacy at DLUT includes spearheading the partnership that built the transportation infrastructure serving Bridgeport Village; contributing to the transportation planning and funding efforts for North Bethany; directing staff in the design of numerous major county road and bridge improvement projects under strict environmental protection and enhancement standards; and the creative use of federal stimulus (ARRA) funds for traffic control improvements, which upgraded most county signals.

Greg also held leadership positions in several professional organizations, including service on the Government Affairs Committee at the national level of the American Public Works Association. He was also recognized as County Engineer of the Year in 2010 by the Oregon Association of County Engineers and Surveyors, for both his work with that organization and his record of achievement at DLUT. Former longtime Washington County Administrator Charlie Cameron said, “I worked with Greg a number of years... his record of achievement, combined with a gentle, ethical and results-oriented manner, made him a model public service professional.”

Traditionally, the previous year’s Bowes Award recipient presents it to the next recipient at an APWA awards banquet. Greg was scheduled to attend the banquet and receive the Bowes Award on October 20, 2011. Regrettably, Greg passed away on October 19 after battling a serious illness. At the award ceremony, Kurt Corey, Public Works Director for the City of Eugene and previous recipient of the Bowes Award, presented a heartfelt tribute that opened with a moment of silence and closed with a standing ovation in recognition of Greg and his many professional accomplishments.

We are pleased to announce that Mr. Corey will present the Bowes Award to Greg’s wife Marcia on behalf of OR APWA before the Board of County Commissioners at their Tuesday, November 22, 2011 meeting. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Shirley Huffman Auditorium of the Charles D. Cameron Public Services Building, 155 N. First Avenue in Hillsboro.
