May is National Building Safety Month

Washington County's Board of Commissioners has declared May 2014 National Building Safety Month. Each week features a different aspect of building safety.

The Washington County Board of Commissioners and the Department of Land Use & Transportation (LUT) join other agencies across the nation to declare May 2014 as "NATIONAL BUILDING SAFETY MONTH." This year's theme is "BuildingSafety: Maximizing Resilience, Minimizing Risks."  It reinforces the need for adoption of modern, model building codes, a strong and efficient system of code enforcement and a well-trained professional workforce to maintain the system.

Founded by the International Code Council (ICC), Building Safety Month features a month-long public awareness campaign to help individuals, families and businesses understand what it takes to create and sustain safe and sustainable structures. Each week in May, the campaign will emphasize a different aspect of building safety:

  • Week 1 (May 5 - 11): Fire Safety & Awareness
  • Week 2 (May 12 - 18): Disaster Safety & Mitigation
  • Week 3 (May 19 - 25): Backyard & Pool Safety
  • Week 4 (May 26 - 31): Energy & Green Building
The campaign is presented by the ICC and its 57,000 members worldwide along with a diverse partnership of professionals from the building construction, design and safety community. Corporations, government agencies, professional associations, nonprofits and more come together to support Building Safety Month because they understand the need for safe and sustainable structures where we live, work and play.

 

Throughout May the Department of Land Use & Transportation will partner with the county's Emergency Management Cooperative, Solid Waste & Recycling and Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue to reinforce the importance of emergency preparedness, green construction and code safety through educational lobby displays in public buildings. County Building Services division staff members will also be at the 2014 Public Works Fair near the Beaverton Farmers' Market on Saturday, May 17 from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to answer questions about building codes and permits.
