National Public Works Week: Always There

National Public Public Works Week 2016

This morning (May 3), the Washington County Board of Commissioners proclaimed May 15-21 as National Public Works Week.

National Public Works Week calls attention to the importance of public works in community life. The 2016 theme, "Always There," references how public works department employees are continually responsive to the needs of all community members.  

Public works brings us clean running water, effective storm drains and sewers, sturdy roads and bridges, public transit services, safe building codes, livable communities with parks and green space and sustainable public facilities. 

"Washington County is proud to be one of many regional partners that work in close collaboration to provide the critical public services that make our communities thrive," said Andrew Singelakis, director, Washington County Department of Land Use & Transportation (LUT). 

In conjunction with Public Works Week, the public is invited to a family-friendly Public Works Fair, 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at the Beaverton City Park next to the Beaverton Farmers Market. Children can win prizes and take home fun educational materials. Adults will find brochures and well-informed public works staff who can answer any questions. 

The Public Works Fair is sponsored by LUT, the state Department of Transportation, TriMet, the city of Beaverton's Public Works Department, Clean Water Services, Joint Water Commission, Willamette Water Supply Program and PGE.
