Washington County Animal Services & Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter is accepting 17 small dogs, mostly Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes, from another shelter today. These dogs will be available for adoption at the Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter in Hillsboro on Saturday.

"We often ask other shelters to help us when we have too many animals to handle. This week, we have a lot of room on adoption row, and were thrilled to help when we learned that 17 adorable dogs needed help finding homes," says Deborah Wood, Animal Services manager. "This is a great example of the teamwork our area animal shelters have established."

Shelter staff will assess the dogs' health and behavior today. "These are highly adoptable dogs," says Myndi Hines, senior animal care technician. "People often don't think they can find little dogs at animal shelters. We hope lots of people come out to see these little guys."

All of the dogs will be spayed or neutered and have their first shots and microchips before placement into new homes.

"We've called in our Open Paw volunteers to keep the dogs socialized and our volunteer groomers to help them look even more beautiful that they already are," Wood says.

The fee to adopt a dog is $150 and includes a dog license, permanent microchip, preventive health vaccines, rabies vaccine and a coupon for a free exam at local veterinary offices in Washington County.

To view the dogs, visit the Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter at 1901 SE 24th Avenue in Hillsboro. Adoption hours are Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri, Sat 11am-5:30pm and Wed 12pm-5:30pm. For more information, call the shelter's office at 503-846-7041.
