What started out as an annual low-cost license and vaccine day at the Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter has expanded into a major community event. The Tag Day and Adopt-A-Thon now includes:

  • Half-price adoption fees for cats
  • $50 off dog adoption fees
  • $10 off dog license fees
  • $10 microchips for dogs and cats
  • $11 rabies and distemper vaccines for dogs and cats.

There will also be demonstrations and presentations from:

  • An officer and dog from Washington County Sheriff's K9 unit
  • Sherwood Dog Training Club, demonstrating dogs that find things by scent, retrieve over high jumps, work on hand signals and other advanced obedience moves
  • Dogs Gone Dancin' Canine Freestyle Club will do dancing with dogs demonstrations
  • The Balloon Man will make animal balloons for the children.

Iron Mutt Coffee Company will be providing free coffee for early birds. A big costumed bird from Red Robin will wave people into the event and will give discount coupons. There will be community booths with information about dog parks, Clean Water Services, and Animal Services.

"We're planning a fun-filled event. Even more important, we know times can be hard for the four-footed family members. That's why we're offering low-cost life-saving services," says Animal Services Manager Deborah Wood. "Everyday I witness how valuable dog licenses and microchips are in helping to reunite lost pets with their owners. And, our staff sees how important vaccines are in keeping pets healthy."

Last year Animal Services received about 7,000 animals and reunited over 1,200 lost dogs and cats to their owners.

No appointment is needed. However, these low prices are only available on Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the animal shelter, 1901 SE 24th Avenue, Hillsboro.
