Board approves Road Maintenance Program for 2016-17

The annual road maintenance program, approved by the Washington County Board of Commissioners at its June 28 meeting, includes paving or sealing of more than 60 miles of roadway, including nearly 21 miles in the Urban Road Maintenance District. (See Road Maintenance Program Summary.)

Private contractors will provide most of the road paving. County crews will perform pavement patching and repairs, chip sealing and crack sealing. These preventive maintenance treatments preserve the pavement and extend the life of the road, saving tax dollars. Over the long term, it is less expensive to maintain pavement than to reconstruct it when it fails. 

Roads will remain open during most of the road paving and sealing work. However, travelers can expect delays. 

Seven Urban Road Maintenance District Safety Improvement projects are included in this year's program. 

"Our goal is to apply the right level of resources, at the right time, to ensure the most cost-effective use of available funds while achieving the best overall condition of our transportation system assets," said Dave Schamp, Operations and Maintenance division manager.
