Board approves Road Maintenance Program for 2018-19

Washington County's 2018-19 Road Maintenance Program was approved by the Board of Commissioners today (June 19). The program outlines the Department of Land Use & Transportation (LUT) road maintenance activities selected for the fiscal year.

Highlights include:

• Paving of more than 10 miles of the major road network and 14 miles of the local road network.
• Performing 22 miles of chip seal on 21 road segments.
• Placing about 7,500 tons of asphaltic concrete while machine patching portions of 19 rural roads.
• Continuing Phase 3 of the Hagg Lake Perimeter Roads Improvement project.
• Shoulder work and resurfacing of River Road between Scholls Ferry and Farmington roads.
• Sweeping about 120 miles of shoulders in the Riparian Management Areas.
• Sweeping about 140 miles of urban and rural bike lanes.
• Cleaning and servicing more than 400 drainage structures.
• Slurry seal applications on about 20 miles of local streets in the Urban Road Maintenance District.

Private contractors will do most of the paving on the major road network and slurry seal operations in the Urban Road Maintenance District. County crews will perform ditch maintenance, gravel road maintenance, pavement patching/repairs and chip sealing. These preventative maintenance treatments preserve the pavement and extend the life of the road, saving tax dollars. Over the long term, it is less expensive to maintain pavement than reconstruct it when it fails.
