Helvetia Road closed due to damaged railroad trestle

Helvetia Road is closed between Dierdorff Road and Grossen Drive due to damage caused after a dump truck struck the trestle on Monday (July 17).

Helvetia Road is closed between Dierdorff Road and Grossen Drive due to damage caused after a dump truck struck the trestle on Monday (July 17).

A spokesperson for the Portland & Western Railroad (PNWR) estimated that repairs to the trestle could take five to seven days, depending on the extent of the damage and needed repairs. Todd Watkins, acting manager, Washington County Department of Land Use & Transportation Operations and Maintenance Division, said that road repairs may also be necessary.

Helvetia Road is closed at the trestle to all travelers;local traffic only is allowed between Dierdorff Road and Grossen Drive/Badertscher Road. Through traffic is detoured on West Union and Jackson Quarry roads. (See map)Swiss Festival attendees and patrons of Helvetia Tavern and other businesses north of the trestle should access Helvetia Road from Jackson Quarry Road.
