County crews completed fog sealing on schedule this week. Road striping will be restored soon.

Fog seals planned for final week
Update: 07/24/15

With near ideal weather, county crews were able to finish chip sealing on schedule. Next week all the recently chip sealed roads will be fog sealed. The fog seal, a thin film of liquid asphalt and sand, fills small voids and provides a smoother surface.

The tentative schedule for fog sealing is as follows:

  • Monday, July 27 - Cornelius-Schefflin Road, Gordon Road, Clapshaw Hill Road.
  • Tuesday, July 28 - Minter Bridge Road, Grabel Road, Rood Bridge Road, Century Boulevard (229th Avenue).
  • Wednesday, July 29 - Patton Valley Road, Old Hwy 47, Oak Street.
  • Thursday, July 30 - Pacific Drive, Aebischer Road.

Rained out on Monday, still on schedule

A bit of rain Monday morning canceled chip seal work for the day, but good weather last week and a dry forecast should keep crews on schedule.

The tentative schedule is as follows:

  • Week of July 13 - Clapshaw Hill Road, Cornelius-Schefflin Road, Gordon Road, Oak Street. 
  • Week of July 20 - Grabel Road, Minter Bridge Road, Rood Bridge Road, Century Boulevard (229th Avenue). 
  • Week of July 27 - fog seal all chip sealed roads.

Chip seals set to start July 6

At its June 23 meeting, the Washington County Board of Commissioners approved the 2015-16 Road Maintenance Program which includes chip sealing 18.7 miles of road.

The tentative schedule is as follows:

  • Week of July 6 - Pacific Drive, Aebischer Road, Patton Valley Road.
  • Week of July 13 - Old Hwy 47, Clapshaw Hill Road, Cornelius-Schefflin Road, Gordon Road, Oak Street.
  • Week of July 20 - Grabel Road, Minter Bridge Road, Rood Bridge Road, Century Boulevard (229th Avenue).
  • Week of July 27 - fog seal all chip sealed roads.

Washington County invites public review and comment on the draft 2015-16 Road Maintenance Program, which includes chip sealing the following roads:

  • 229th Avenue from Rosedale Road to Hillsboro city limits (Rosedale Elementary) (map)
  • Aebischer Road from Kruger Road to Edy Road (map)
  • Clapshaw Hill Road from Hillside Road to Gales Creek Road (map)
  • Cornelius-Schefflin Road from Verboort Road to Kerkman Road (map)
  • Gordon Road from Zion Church Road to Hwy 26 (map)
  • Grabel Road from Minter Bridge Road to Hwy 219 (map)
  • Green Mountain Road from Sell Road to end of pavement (map)
  • Minter Bridge Road from Morgan Road to Grabel Road (map)
  • Oak Street from Hwy 47 to Forest Grove jurisdiction (railroad tracks) (map)
  • Old Hwy 47 from Patton Valley Road to Hwy 47 (map)

Bicyclists may want to avoid roads during and immediately after chip sealing. During the chip seal process, the road surface is covered with an emulsified asphalt and small rocks (chips). A roller presses the chips into the emulsion, and the surface is swept to remove most of the loose material. To reduce the amount of loose chips even more, a polymerized (stickier) asphalt is used. The process is completed with a fog seal, which is a thin film of liquid asphalt and sand. The fog seal fills small voids, providing a smoother surface.

The process may take several weeks from start to finish depending on weather and other factors. Chip sealing starts in July and is completed by the end of August. The most up-to-date schedule information is posted online at www.wc-roads.com or call 503-846-ROAD (846-7623).
