Social Equity

Sustainability helps to promote social equity through various initiatives.

In addition to the work of the Office of Equity, Inclusion & Community Engagement, Sustainability helps to promote social equity in several ways.

  • Employee Giving – In 2021, Washington County employees donated over $30,000 through payroll deduction to local nonprofits working to promote conservation, social equity, the arts, public health, and more.

  • Identity and Heritage Diversity Celebrations – We celebrate Black History Month, Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Native American Heritage Month, and Pride Month.

  • County Equity Committees – These groups work to create a more equitable workplace through procurement, data tracking, policy, education, boards and commissions, and civil rights.

  • Diverse Workforce Reports – Outlines the County’s workforce and contracting through the Washington County Diverse Workforce and Procurement Snapshot (2019), Department Demographics Snapshot (2020), and Diverse Workforce Overview Snapshot (2020).

  • World Social Justice Day – Each year we celebrate United Nations World Day of Social Justice by hosting a panel discussion with community partners working to improve social equity.

  • This brief video helps explain the social component of sustainability.
