Volunteer with us!

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Washington County Animal Services and the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter! The first step in becoming a volunteer is to attend our Animal Services Academy. This one-day training is designed to introduce you to the services and resources we offer the people and pets in Washington County. At the Academy, our staff will also go over the next steps for becoming a volunteer at the animal shelter. Visit the Animal Services Academy webpage to register for our next session.

Please note that you must be at least 16 years old to volunteer with us.

Become a Volunteer Ambassador

Volunteer ambassadors are specially trained volunteers who help answer animal welfare questions within their own communities. They may share information with neighbors and friends informally (either online or in person) or represent our agency at community events.

Become a Volunteer Shelter Assistant

Shelter assistants help keep shelter operations running smoothly by doing animal-related laundry and dishes. Volunteers in this role may also be asked to clean kennels and prepare enrichment for pets staying at the shelter. This position does not involve direct contact with animals. However, volunteering as a shelter assistant is a prerequisite for becoming a dog walking volunteer.

This volunteer position requires a commitment of a weekly two-hour shift for at least six months.

Become a Volunteer Dog Walker

Dog walkers take approved shelter dogs out to fenced yards for potty breaks, playtime and training. Volunteers in this role may also be asked to clean kennels, as well as act as monitors and reporters of general dog behavior and health.

This volunteer position requires a commitment of a weekly two-hour shift for at least six months.

We don’t currently offer foster volunteer opportunities. We encourage you to check with other local rescue organizations if you want to foster animals.
